I have quite the opposite experience with this Prolink mouse. I normally stick with branded mice (MS, Logitech etc.), therefore last time when I went shopping for a good portable mouse for my notebook I ended up buying a Microsoft Notebook Laser Mouse 6000; the worst mouse I ever owned !. It behaved exactly like your Prolink. Only works on completely black mousepads. (jumps all over the screen if used on a surface with light colors or patterns).

Then I saw this cheap Prolink mouse few days back when I was looking for a cheap wireless keyboard mouse combo for my desktop server; Didn’t worry too much about the brand because I don’t use the desktop very often. However, to my surprise this Prolink turned out to be much better than the more expensive MS 6000! Now I use it as the primary mouse with the notebook. Even though it may not be as accurate or as sensitive as some of the high-end optical mice out there, it is still very usable for normal work, has better precision and range than the MS Notebook 6000.
